The Things We Do...2009-09-25 00:00:00It has been almost one year (probably a bit more, right) since the achievements system was introduced to the game. And with the achievements system - one very particular achievement. . Now that Brewfest is back around the corner, many of us are finally getting our chance to finish the trip and be rightfully awarded with a beautiful (Spell #60024) (that flies at 310% speed, but we want it for the beauty, of course). But how many of you stopped while doing all those achievements, and thought "Man, what I am doing is a complete absurd! I have morals, I should not be doing this for some drake!" Yea, I didn't either... But now that we are almost done with our lovely trip, I thought I would put a list of all the weird things we've done over the last year, trying to get the Violet Proto-drake. Read on, and enjoy the (long, strange) trip! Went all around the world, cheating old men and women into give you their savings. Wasted the aforementioned savings on someth...
WoW player's guide to GW: PvP2009-09-22 00:00:00In Guild Wars, PvP is all handled within organized arenas. There are no random duel requests every 5 minutes while running around outside, and there are not people trying to jump in front of your fishing pole to get you to click on them so they can slaughter you in one hit.
That said, GW PvP is highly advanced and specialized. Since there are so many different types of...

Do not buy an Alienware product, ever, under any circumstances. Those of you who have read this column over the last year or so have read often about my experience with a $3,500 Alienware laptop, also known as the most expensive doorstop to ever be delivered to my door. It has had its share of problems, but this morning it decided enough was enough. Done. Dead! It won't boot up and in fact there isn't even the most remote sign of life. No lights. No sounds. Just dead silicon. Now more good news... the census portion of our WoWDB addon is nearly complete. Grab the addon, an...

Is a New Blizzard Game Coming?2009-09-07 00:00:00Rumors are flying that Blizzard Entertainment is working on a brand-new game that has not yet even been mentioned to the public.
The whispers began when Blizzard posted two job openings for an unannounced project on its website. Both positions are for software engineers, one client and one gameplay, and promise the opportunity to "get in on the ground floor of a dynamic and focused team working on a brand new project." Fairy st...
Player vs. Everything: Rebuilding EverQuest2009-09-04 00:00:00Ask any MMOG player about EverQuest, and you'll get one of three responses: either they loved it, they hated it, or they didn't play it (and don't want to). Nobody thinks that it was just a mediocre game, and a lot of people look back fondly on their time there, warts and all. There were a lot of warts. When I was chatting with Scott Hartsman at this year's IMGDC, he explained to me that EverQuest was rife with any number of "pain points" which later games were able to identify, fix, and build upon to make their own game better. Taking most of what was good about EverQuest and cutting most of what was bad was one of the things that helped World of Warcraft dethrone the game and take its seat as the number one MMORPG on the market.
However, not everyone agrees with all of the "improvements" that Blizzard made to the genre when they created WoW. The arguments over what should and shouldn't be left out of a great MMORPG continue to this day, and there's no quick and easy guide to what's MMOG gold. Plenty of companies are learning the hard way that cloning World of Warcraft isn't a winning strategy. It's a great game, but that doesn't mean it's the only way to play. My question for you all today is this: What if inst...
